A Call to Action!

Operation Quilts Lake Tahoe is a project to support our military troops overseas by sending patriotic quilts to brighten their barracks and to be a constant reminder of our love.

Freedom Quilt
To date, the folks at Tater Patch Quilts in Merrill, Oregon, who started Operation Quilts, have made and sent over 1250 quilts to our sons and daughters serving in the military overseas.

We have modeled our Operation Quilts Lake Tahoe after the original, started by Robin King and Diane McKoen of Tater Patch Quilts in Merrill, Oregon.

Here is some information on their success:

Robin and Diane in MerrillFrom the above web site: "Klamath Basin women, whose families had been devastated by the irrigation water cut-off this year, showed their appreciation on Labor Day to the troops serving in the U.S. military. Over 140 women ages 10 – 95, from Tulelake, Merrill, Malin, Klamath Falls, and Medford, made 100 quilts. “Operation Quilts is to show support for our troops, to give them comfort and support,” explains Robin King. Diane McKoen says she wants our servicemen to know that they are important, unlike the lack of appreciation our men received after serving in Vietnam. On each quilt is written “To our sons and daughters from American mothers.”"

From the Tater Patch Quilts newsletter, Oct. Nov. Dec., 2002:

"We will never be able to thank everyone who has helped with "Operation Quilts" - there have been so many from the 4-H Kids that helped make and serve food, the hundreds of you that have made or helped make the quilts, to those that donated supplies, money, etc., THANK YOU. You need to know you have helped make a difference, (just stop by and read a few of the letters we have received). Keep up the community pride. Again from our hearts and the hearts of the 550 plus (now 650 plus) military men and women, THANK YOU. Home truly is where the heart is! GOD BLESS AMERICA. Robin and Diane"

This is just what we intend to do in South Lake Tahoe.
Stay tuned to this web page for further developments.

Please send your contact information and we will add you to the list of volunteers and donators. If you have previous quilting experience and want to help make the four log cabin squares for the corners and cut the fabric, let us know as there will be re-meetings to put the packets together.

Thank You to all quilters, experienced and beginners, who want to help our troops.
