Freedom
Day 1
March 8, 2003
Kathleen
Stuart was one of the volunteers who helped make the first Freedom
Day a success. We completed 15 quilts and many kits were taken to
be made at home. The Carson Valley Quilt Guild members are also
working on this project.

Lorice
made these beautiful hand painted pins for the volunteers. This
really made us feel special.
|
 |
 |
About 50 quilts
is our goal to be completed and sent by the end of March. Everyone
who has helped has shown such a wonderful enthusiasm for the work. |
| Get Ready. Set.
Go! Karen gives the pep talk. |
 |
 |
Susan Willmett,
working as "back up." She also cooked the chili and baked
the cookies. Susan is in charge of collecting the names and addresses
of service men and women who will receive the finished quilts. |
|
Peggy
Lallament supervises the "putting it all together" stage
of quilt making. For many this was the first time they had seen
how a quilt is completed and they were surprised to get this far
in the process in one day.

Piecing together
the borders. Ruth and Renee lay out the pieces to see what the quilt
will look like before starting the sewing. |
| Karen and Mary
Beth pick out pre-cut pieces to make a kit for a quilt top. |

 |
Quilters
in action. Mary and Cheryl are busy piecing together their quilt
tops. The quilt on the wall shows the finished quilt with the heart
label reading,
"To
America's sons and daughters,with
love from America's mothers. Operation Quilts, 2003."
|
|
"How
many quilters does it take to thread a bobbin?"
On
these antique Singers it may take more than one!
|
 |
 |
The
fabrics are all red, white, and blue... but I want just the right
one to go in my quilt.
|
|
Sadie
and her grandmother work together on the top piece.
|
 |
 |
Sadie
came with her grandmother, Donna. They sewed on a gorgeous vintage
blue Singer machine and had a great day putting together Sadie's
first quilt.

Quilting
is a craft for all ages.

Checking
the construction of the samples.

|
Karin
and Laura are still smiling after several hours of work. It's always
more fun when we work together.
|
 |
 |
Jan
and Mary Beth are sewing together 1 1/2 inch strips to make the
Log Cabin corners for the quilts. Quilters are often teased for
cutting perfectly good fabric up in tiny pieces just so they can
sew them together again!
